Knowing Mom and Dad would take care of Rory until I emerged from my room, I didn’t rush, staying under the spray until the water ran cold. After a quick blowout of my hair to make it manageable, I pull it back into a ponytail and apply a touch of makeup. A final inspection in the full-length mirror and I conclude I look less like a zombie than I did earlier and am ready to face the day.

Stepping into the kitchen, Rory and both sets of grandparents are eating their breakfast. I don’t think they see me, so I back pedal and peek around the corner from the hallway to spy.

“Where would you like to have dinner tonight?” Mom directs her question to Rory, who is busy shoveling fruit-flavored loop cereal into her mouth.

“I don’t know,” she mumbles while chewing.

“Don’t talk with your mouthful.” Mom gently scolds.

Rory swallows then taps her finger against her chin. I do it subconsciously when thinking and it’s something she still likes to imitate. “Helen’s.”

“Fantastic choice,” Dad says, beaming at his granddaughter.

“Sounds perfect to me.” David nods his approval.

“What do you think, Kellie?” Tracy looks right at me and offers a warm smile.

“That I’ve been busted.” I turn the corner and join them at the table, sitting in the empty chair next to Rory. “Good morning.”

“Morning, Addy K.” Rory reaches out, and I take her into my arms, allowing her to sit on my lap. I inhale slowly and am grateful when the aroma from the bacon, eggs, and fried potatoes doesn’t turn me green around the gills.

“So, are you enjoying having breakfast with your grandparents?” I reach for a slice of toast from a plate in the middle of the table. Testing my appetite, I nibble a corner and swallow, expecting it to climb back up my throat like everything else has lately. When my stomach doesn’t immediately reject the food, I take a bigger bite and pour myself some juice.

“Yes, and Gram Gram said we could go to Helen’s and then I can sleep over.”

“No, I said we will ask Aunt Kellie if you can spend the night with us after we have dinner.” Mom corrects her. I rarely say no to Rory staying with my parents, but I appreciate my mom not assuming and waiting for my approval.

“You know what?” I take a sip to wash down the dry toast. “I think that’s a great plan. I have something important I need to do tonight and not having to rush will make it a lot easier.”

“Yay!” Rory climbs down from my lap. “I’ll go pack.”

“I’ll help.” Mom trails right behind her.

“They might need an extra hand.” Tracy stands and follows Mom out of the kitchen.

“And off they go.” Dad’s belly shakes with laughter. “They’ve been acting bizarre all morning.”

“You know…” David looks to my dad. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say our wives are up to something.”

“You wouldn’t by chance have any idea why they are acting so strange, would you, Kellie?” Dad tilts his head, and I nearly spit the juice I was drinking across the table.
